English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are available for students - in both primary and high schools - whose first language is not English.

Students eligible for ESL support range from those newly arrived in Australia and beginning to learn English, to Australian born students from a non-English speaking background.

How can parents communicate with the school if they don't speak English?

Translation and interpreter services are available. Telephone 13 14 50 for assistance.

Can a child study his or her own community language?

Yes, some classes are available in school and others through the Saturday School of Community Languages.

Recently arrived in Australia?

Students who have recently arrived in Australia and who are in the early stages of learning English are eligible for short term intensive English language support. There are 15 Intensive English Centres (IECs) located in Sydney and Wollongong to cater for newly arrived high-school-aged students who need intensive English language support before they start school.

ESL for the Higher School Certificate

As part of the Higher School Certificate English course, a Stage 6 English (ESL) course has been implemented in 110 schools throughout the state.

To give students from non-English speaking backgrounds equal access to education the Department provides:

ESL-aware teachers and staff who can confidently impart multicultural values resources which promote different traditions in language and culture programs to meet the special teaching and learning needs of students from non-English speaking backgrounds research to identify good practice in ESL education recognition and acclaim for excellence in ESL education.
